I love vintage linens and have a fine collection which I am in the process of upcycling . The process began with the Schiffly  Project and reemerged  during my MA and has continued ever since . I love to translate my drawings onto tablecloths , mats , antimacassers (textile backs for chairs and settees ). I cut up and applique birds from old lace edges onto napkins using cutwork , translate drawings using a combination of embroidery techniques , create window dressings from preloved hand towels .Sometimes I pre-dye cloths to work on othertimes  keep them the original colour , sometimes the cloth has the same end use othertimes it is transformed into a pegbag or a tea cosy . As these are one off pieces they are too many to present here so here are a few examples of products you may  find at my shows .

Schiffli machine : work in progress
"Endangered" 236/206cms hand dyed silk and cottons on vintage damask

"Endangered" Mechanical Drawing – the Schiffli project Manchester Metropolitan University 2007 www.miriad.mmu.ac.uk/schiffli from whom further information and copies of the catalogue can be obtained .

"The schiffli project documents and explores textile practice and the creative process through the responses of fifteen artists to this unique machine."

It seemed appropriate to make my piece about endangered British wildflowers on a machine that is itself endangered . The basecloth is part of a damask tablecloth used in the boardroom af my paternal grandfathers woollen and worsted business in Bradford long since closed down and features six endangered British wild flowers .Hand dyed natural fibre pieces of cloth were attached across the lenth of the fabric and then part hand cut away to reveal  the flowers .

"The schiffli machine  is a unique, one hundred year old multi-needle embroidery machine capable of mechanically stitching repeat patterns or images across a two-metre wide piece of cloth. The stitched designs are created by moving a pantograph by hand. Such machines were traditionally used to mass-produce commercial embroidery.

Contemporary schiffli machines are computerised. Whilst this speeds up production, within an art school environment the pantograph schiffli machine provides a unique opportunity to be physically involved in the creation of the embroidered image. The design has to be drawn up six times larger than the finished embroidery; the operator traces around the design, pressing a trigger to make the needles shoot forwards to create the stitches."

The piece has been donated to the prestigious Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester as a part of their textiles collection .

Manchester Buddhist Centre Commission

Funded by the Arts Council during 2005 I created flags and banners for the shrine room and outdoor ceremonies for the Five Buddha Mandala. The flags can be seen there at various times during 2006.
Please contact the Buddhist Centre on 0161 834 9232 for details .

“ Consistently beautiful and intriguing designs that deepened my sense of the different qualities of the Buddhas. It became part of my practice to appreciate Rowena’s work and reflect on how her vision tied in with the themes of the year. Her contribution has proved how our communal life and practice at the Centre is enhanced and supported by artistic work of a professional standard." Lalitavira

“The flags were a step up in aesthetic for the Centre shrine decoration. I loved the delicacy of many of the designs. Very inspiring." Mahabodhi.

Chorlton Ees

A celebration of Manchester’s green spaces.

Using dye, print and stitch on cotton this piece is double layered to create a sense of depth and abundance . The base represents the strength of nature the top layer the delicate balance of species coexisting.

The research for this piece was conducted over several weeks during May and June with daily visits to the Ees, a swathe of woods and open grassland that leads down to the River Mersey in Chorlton. I recorded the wildlife and absorbed the essence through photography and drawing. In any half hour visit I would find several different species from the day before.

The Ees are used for a variety of purposes by the local people including dog walking. cycling, jogging, bird watching, parties, ceremonies , meeting friends. These green spaces are essential for our health and well-being. Away from the hustle and bustle of city life we can renew our spirits and regain a sense of well being .Just as green spaces renew us we need to respect and protect them.
